modesty

I came across the following at the Tradicio in Radice blog.  As the weather becomes warm, one notices just how little clothing some people are willing to wear.  Kids these days.... Raised by wolves.... etc.

Its shocking what kinds of (lack of) clothing one will sometimes see even in church and at mass, to say nothing of walking down the sidewalk.  And immodesty very often presents a serious stumbling block to the sanctity of onlookers, and presents an occasion for sin.  Here is what has been said:

"The good of our soul is more important than that of our body; and we
have to prefer the spiritual welfare of our neighbor to our bodily
comforts… If a certain kind of dress constitutes a grave and proximate
occasion of sin, and endangers the salvation of your soul and others,
it is your duty to give it up… " (Pope Pius XII to Catholic Young Women’s Groups of Italy)

And

“Man himself does not escape from the inclination of exhibiting his
flesh: some go in public, stripped to the waist, or in very tight pants
or in very scanty bathing suits. They thus commit offenses against the
virtue of modesty. They may also be an occasion of sin (in thought or
desire) for our neighbor.”  (Canadian RC Bishops in 1946)

Also, read what MM has to say on the subject. Perennial wisdom from my favorite blogger.

If you think what you see at mass is bad, you should see what my students try to get away with here in sunny Florida. Not that I'm a prude, but I agree that things are out of control.
