archbishop williams to attend pope benedict's installation

The Archbishop of Canterbury is due to leave the UK to attend Pope Benedict XVI's inauguration in Rome on Sunday.

Rowan Williams's presence is being seen as a sign of good relations between the Anglican and Catholic churches.

But the move follows strains over gay marriages and the ordination of women priests by the Church of England.

Here is the whole thing.

Is Griswold or anyone from ECUSA going? Sorry, I meant, would Griswold or anyone from ECUSA be allowed to attend?

Apparently Griswold will not attend. Interestingly, though, Archbishop Drexel Gomez will be at the audience with Archbishop Williams after the inauguration. (Do you call it an inauguration, or what?) Here is what Ruth Gledhill has to say:

By comparison the liberal primate of the Anglican church in the US, Bishop Frank Griswold, has been invited to neither the inauguration nor the audience.

The US church will instead be represented by Bishop Pierre Whalon of Europe, and Bishop Christopher Epting, the Bishop Griswold’s deputy for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations.

Griswold was also forced off of the ARCIC, if my rumor-mongering memory serves me correctly.
